Writing the Cut Plan Before Anyone Touches a Blank
A blank can only get shorter. That one fact is the whole reason a plan gets written, checked, and signed before the saw is switched on.

Somewhere in the first month this shop was cutting blanks for other people's counters, a work order came back with a note scrawled across the bottom: "too short, redo." No length was written anywhere else on the sheet. Nobody could say whether it had been cut short by an eighth of an inch or by two full inches, or which end the material had come off. The blank was gone either way, and so was the afternoon it took to source a replacement.
That is the entire argument for a cut plan. Not caution for its own sake — the plain fact that a saw only removes material, never adds it back. Every other decision on a build can be revisited. A cut cannot.
What Actually Gets Written Down
Before a blank leaves the rack, four numbers go on a sheet: the raw length as it comes out of the box, the tip trim intended, the target butt frequency once assembled, and the finished playing length those first three should add up to. None of it is complicated arithmetic. All of it is easy to skip when a customer is standing at the counter and everyone would rather just get to cutting.
We don't skip it. The plan gets written whether the job is a single wedge or a full set, whether the person cutting has done four thousand of these or four hundred, and whether the customer is watching or has already left the shop to run an errand. It takes under a minute and it is the only thing standing between "we think this is right" and "we know this is right."
A cut plan isn't there to slow the saw down. It's there so the saw only has to run once.
Why the Order Matters
Length arithmetic is where a rushed cut goes wrong most often. Say a golfer needs a 38.5-inch finished 6-iron and the raw blank measures 41 inches. It is tempting to simply take 2.5 inches off somewhere and call it done. Where that material comes from decides what club actually gets built.
Tip trim stiffens a blank far more than butt trim does, because the tip section is the thinnest, most active part of the shaft to begin with. Removing the wrong amount from the wrong end produces a club that is exactly the length ordered and nowhere near the stiffness intended. The correct sequence is always tip trim to the plan first, then the blank goes into the head, then butt trim brings it to finished length. Skipping straight to a length number and cutting wherever is convenient is how a "correct" club plays wrong for years without anyone being able to say why.
What a Plan Catches Before It's a Problem
- A raw blank that's shorter than expected for a tall player wanting extra length
- Tip trim specified for the wrong blank model, which can over-stiffen or barely change anything
- A target frequency that was never checked against the rest of a matched set
- Two people on the bench assuming the other one already measured something
Every one of those is a small mistake caught on paper, in under a minute, before it becomes an afternoon lost to a wasted blank. That trade has never once looked bad in fifteen years on this bench.
After the Cut
The plan doesn't end when the saw stops. Once a club is built and cured, the finished measurements — butt CPM, swingweight, playing length — get written next to the planned numbers on the same sheet. If they land more than a small margin apart, the club goes back on the bench before it ever reaches the counter. That comparison is only possible because the plan existed first. Without a target written down beforehand, a finished measurement is just a number with nothing to check it against.
Once everything matches, the sheet gets signed by whoever ran the saw and becomes the first page of your work order. It's not a formality tacked onto the end of a job. It's the reason the job went the way it was supposed to in the first place.
