A fairway wood asks a shaft to do something a driver never has to: load off the turf, not off a tee. Shorter blanks and a different effective tip stiffness change the cut plan considerably from what a driver needs.
Consistency Off the Deck, Not Just Off the Tee
Fairway wood blanks run shorter than driver blanks and typically hold a stiffer effective tip for the same nominal flex, because loading has to stay consistent whether contact happens off a tight lie or a slightly sitting-down one. That difference is written into the cut plan before anything is trimmed.
Once cut and assembled, we check the build off both a mat and real turf where possible, since a shaft that loads cleanly off a tee can behave differently the moment ground contact enters the swing.

Sole Design & Bounce
Wider soles help forgive slightly heavy contact; narrower soles suit players who catch the ball cleanly and want less resistance through turf.
Loft Spread From the Driver
A gap that's too tight or too wide against your driver's real carry number gets caught here, before it's baked into a full-set cut plan.
Blank Weight
Hand-matched the same way as a driver blank, though the weight band typically runs slightly heavier for turf consistency.
Length
Shorter than driver length by design, which raises control at the cost of a little raw speed — a trade most players are glad to make on approach shots.
Head Volume
Smaller heads sit lower and shallower through the turf; larger heads offer more forgiveness on thin contact. Chosen after the blank, not before.

Often a sole design and bounce mismatch for your angle of attack, not purely a swing fault. Worth checking before changing the shaft.
Weak, Ballooning Flight Off Turf
