Wedge Work
Wedges score. That's the whole argument for building them to a weight target and bounce plan on paper rather than leaving them to whatever came stock in the box.
The Cut Plan Weighs Feel as Much as Flight
A wedge cut plan starts differently from a driver's: the target isn't maximum distance, it's consistent feel and trajectory control from 100 yards and in. Blank weight is set to keep swingweight progression climbing smoothly from your shortest iron through your lob wedge, so the whole scoring set feels like one continuous tool.
Bounce and grind get chosen against how you actually interact with turf and sand, checked on the practice area near the shop rather than guessed from a generic loft chart.
Wedge Work Order
The Variables on a Wedge Cut Plan
Bounce Angle
Higher bounce suits a steeper attack angle and softer turf; lower bounce suits shallower players on firmer ground. Set against your actual angle of attack, not your handicap.
Sole Grind
Determines how the sole interacts with turf on shots played off the toe, heel, or a wide-open face. Chosen after watching how you actually approach the ball.
Loft Gapping
Checked against carry distance for each wedge in the set, not assumed from four- or five-degree factory increments.
Blank Weight
Set to keep swingweight climbing smoothly from your last iron through the lob wedge, so touch stays consistent across the scoring set.
Grip Texture
A firmer, more textured grip is common on wedges for players who want more feedback on partial shots. Logged on the work order like any other spec.
Finish
Raw, chrome, or black finishes wear and spin slightly differently over time. A cosmetic choice with a small practical side, noted for your own reference later.
What Wedge Work Usually Fixes
Chunked or Bladed Short Shots
Frequently a bounce mismatch for your attack angle rather than a technique fault. A grind change often solves it faster than a swing change.
Distance Gaps Inside 100 Yards
Usually a loft-gapping issue that's never been checked against real carry numbers. Mapping the set closes it without adding a club you don't need.
